The plastic valves can accumulate saliva residue over time due to prolonged contact with moisture. This buildup can lead to poor coverage and make the plates stick more easily. If you notice that the plates are sticking or discolouring, it’s time to replace them.
Under normal circumstances, I recommend replacing the entire set of plates. With regular practice, the wear on each valve tends to be fairly uniform (unless you're only playing specific notes). Therefore, it’s best to remove all the plates, clean the reed plates thoroughly, and then apply new plastic plates. This way, you can completely eliminate the accumulated saliva residue.

Everyone has different playing habits and breath techniques (especially beginners, who may not have a fixed style), so making slight adjustments to the reed gap is essential to tailor the harmonica to your playing style.
A smaller reed gap provides better sensitivity and responsiveness but can limit airflow, leading to issues like reed to stuck. On the other hand, a larger reed gap allows for greater airflow but may sacrifice some sensitivity. Finding a balanced gap is essential for optimal performance and expression in your playing.
Certainly, in addition to the gap, how easy it is to play also relates to the curvature of the reeds. However, this is a more advanced topic. For now, harmonica players can focus on adjusting the reed gap to better suit their individual playing style.

However, the tone produced by plastic is somewhat generic and lacks distinct character. More advanced players often choose wood or metal materials, as the density of the wood and the type of metal can significantly affect sound quality.
